Alpinism 1 is our most popular entry-level mountaineering course, designed for anyone ready to step into glaciated peaks and alpine environments. Whether you’re dreaming of climbing Mount Baker, aiming for bigger objectives in the Cascades, or preparing for future expeditions, this course delivers the technical skills and real-world experience you need.
Over six full days, you will learn the fundamentals of glacier travel, including rope team movement, crevasse rescue, self-arrest, as well as basic rock climbing skills. The course begins with a day focused on foundational rock skills, covering knots, hitches, belaying, and rappelling. The remaining 5 days are spent on the glaciers of Mt. Baker. There, our guides will teach you how to use crampons and an ice axe efficiently, how to climb and descend steep snow safely, and how to build snow and ice anchors. You’ll also develop critical decision-making skills around navigation, route-finding, and mountain hazard assessment.
For over 50 years, AAI has been teaching climbers how to move confidently in the mountains, making this program a trusted starting point for aspiring alpinists.
You’ll come away awed by the terrain you have seen, proud of your accomplishments, and you will have the knowledge and experience to operate as a skilled rope team member on climbs of intermediate difficulty.
