Ellsworth Range

Entirely unexplored until 1966, the Ellsworth range was long regarded as a scientific curiosity. In that year the American Alpine Club, backed by the National Science Foundation, organized the first successful ascent of Mt. Vinson, and a new era of Antarctic exploration was born.

Ellsworth Range Programs

The Ellsworth Mountains rise stark and majestic above the West Antarctic Ice Sheet, stretching for more than 200 miles across the the base of the Antarctic Peninsula. This range contains Antarctica’s highest peaks, including 16,050-foot Mount Vinson, and is divided into two striking subranges: the Sentinel Range to the north and the Heritage Range to the south. Rugged ridgelines, sweeping glaciers, and jagged rock faces make the Ellsworths a dramatic contrast to the endless white plains that surround them, offering climbers some of the most stunning alpine scenery on Earth.

American Alpine Institute offers expeditions to the Ellsworth Range for alpinists, Antarctic enthusiasts, and Seven Summits aspirants.
