Alpine Mountaineering and Technical Leadership Part 1 (AMTL 1) is the foundation of AAI’s renowned four-part Alpine Mountaineering & Technical Leadership progression. It is the ultimate introduction to the world of alpine climbing.
This course is ideal for:
• Outdoor enthusiasts who are looking to move into more technical alpine environments
• If you have little-to-no previous roped climbing experience
• Indoor climbers who are looking to move into the world of outdoor alpine climbing
• You want to gain the skills and confidence to move in glacier and alpine rock terrain
Over 12 immersive days, you’ll gain the foundational technical and judgement skills to begin your journey in glaciated and alpine rock terrain while building the foundation for the more advanced challenges of the series.
AAI’s four-part Alpine Mountaineering and Technical Leadership (AMTL) series has been described by National Accreditation reviewers as “the most practical and complete course devoted to technical mountain leadership offered in America.” For more than 50 years, AAI has set the benchmark for alpine education in North America, and this program reflects that legacy.
The majority of the program is about acquiring key fundamental skills. However, there are also the opportunities for the application and integration of those skills in real terrain. The course has two distinct sections to it, allowing you to focus on specific skills in applicable environments. During the first 6 days, you’ll gain hands-on experience with the essential skills needed to travel in glaciated mountains. From self-arrest to rope team travel, crevasse rescue to route finding, this course is built to take new climbers and turn them into competent, thoughtful partners in the mountains.
After training on the glaciers of Mount Baker and making a summit attempt, the focus shifts to learning alpine rock climbing skills to make ascents in the Washington Pass area. In this second half of the course, you’ll learn the nuances of multi-pitch rock climbing like rappelling, belaying, top rope management, and route finding.
Finally, the course concludes with a student-led ascent of a major North Cascades summit in which you’ll have the opportunity to bring together everything that you’ve learned so far. By the end of this program, you will have the foundational technical and judgment skills needed to continue toward independent alpine climbing and leadership development. Set against the stunning backdrop of Mt. Baker and the North Cascades, AMTL 1 lays the technical and decision-making foundation you need for future progression and independent alpine climbing experiences, as well as preparing you for Alpine Mountaineering and Technical Leadership Part 2.
Alpine Mountaineering and Technical Leadership Course Progression

This flow chart shows how our series of AMTL courses flow, as well as how the curriculums of other course offerings fit into the overall progression. As you can see, while the AMTL progression is a series of longer, 12-day programs, there are a variety of ways that a climber can work through these skills. We recognize that climbers often have some kind of previous experience when the first come to us, but also often have gaps in their knowledge and skills. By offering these other programs, we can help you fill in those gaps so that you can more easily move into the main AMTL progression.
