Joel grew up in central Idaho, where he learned to love and appreciate the outdoors while spending his first summers in a fire lookout tower. Now, he spends most of his summers working with helicopters as a wildland firefighter for the Forest Service. Joel gained a passion for teaching by working as a ski and snowboard instructor for 15 years. At the age of 23, climbing entered his life and he quickly became passionate about all aspects, including rock, ice, and alpine climbing. Joel began guiding while working for a gap year academy where he took young adults backcountry skiing and climbing.
