Alex grew up in the south and started climbing in Arkansas before moving west to join the Marine Corps. A long-standing desire to pursue colder climates and higher elevations brought Alex to summit peaks in the Sierra, Cascade, Sawtooth, Bugaboo, and Teton mountain ranges. Alex has climbed in nine U.S. states as well as in Mexico, Canada, Thailand, and Spain.
