Curriculum

This course is designed to prepare you for overnight winter travel in the backcountry, with a focus on practical skills for staying comfortable, organized, and efficient in cold environments. You’ll learn how to manage your gear, build and maintain a functional winter camp, and make sound decisions while navigating and touring through snow-covered terrain.

Students Will Learn:
  • Avalanche safety equipment review
  • Snow travel skills for moving with a heavy pack
  • Self-care in the mountains
  • Proper camp location selection
  • Planned winter shelters
  • Camp fortification techniques
  • Use of map and compass
  • Introduction to tour planning
  • Mountain ethics and Leave No Trace principles

All course leaders have extensive experience with instruction, rescue and backcountry site analysis in the Cascades and other ranges. They are all AIARE Avalanche Level 1 and 2 certified, and many are avalanche instructors

Details

This course can be completed on skis, splitboard, or snowshoes.

Prerequisites

  • Ability to efficiently move in winter backcountry terrain with the use of either backcountry skis, splitboard, or snowshoes
  • Previous backpacking experience (non-winter)
  • Ability to cook for yourself on a backpacking stove
  • Good physical fitness
  • AIARE 1 Avalanche Course is recommended, but not required.
