Beginning in the early 1800’s, more and more Europeans became interested in exploring the Alps, influenced by the philosophy of Romanticism and powered by the wealth of the new leisure class. That explosion of interest grew into modern alpine mountaineering – termed “alpinism” as a tribute to its birthplace.
