Curriculum

The Squamish Rock Leadership course builds on the basic rock climbing skills found in programs like our Outdoor Rock Climbing – Intensive Introduction or the Alpinism 2 – Intermediate Mountaineering course and helps you develop the skills to start leading on your own. The curriculum includes protection placement and anchor construction, lead climbing techniques, and introduces students to – and gives them the tools to assess and handle – the potential complexities of multi-pitch rock climbing. The last days of the course will be the culmination of skills and practice as students lead a series of rock climbs on the beautiful granite walls of Squamish.

Details

Prerequisites

  • Overnight backpacking experience
  • Ability to cook for yourself on a backpacking stove
  • Familiarity with the basics of single-pitch rock climbing, including knots and hitches, belaying, rappelling, and basic climbing movement
  • Experience with outdoor top-roped climbing
  • Ability to follow 5.8 outdoors
  • Good physical fitness

Travel Details

  • Due to international labor and trade laws, participants in this course must start and finish in the United States. Participants will meet at our headquarters in Bellingham, WA and cross the border together with the trip leader.
  • Participants must have valid documentation for traveling into Canada, as well as a clean background check
  • We are not allowed to have Canadian citizens participate in this program

Notes on Gear

  • Course participants are encouraged to bring their own traditional gear. However, if they do not have any, they will be able to use AAI equipment.
  • Helmets, harnesses, and rock shoes are required equipment and are available for rental if needed.
