Backpacking and Wilderness Skills Itinerary
Please keep in mind that this is a standard, yet loose, itinerary. It is subject to change depending on conditions, weather, group dynamics, pace, and summit strategies.
Program Details
Backpacking and Wilderness Skills is a 2-day program that covers how to overnight camp in the backcountry. Participants gain the skills and confidence to plan and enjoy multi-day backpacking trips on established trails and campsites. Along the way, they build a solid foundation for future wilderness travel and mountaineering adventures while learning important Leave No Trace principles.
Itinerary
Day 1
rendezvous at the American Alpine Institute equipment shop
Plan to meet your fellow climbers and instructor(s) at the AAI Equipment Shop promptly at 7:00 am. Your Guide and an Equipment Specialist will take the time to go over your gear, finalize rentals and purchases, review the itinerary, and ensure everyone is adequately prepared.
As soon as the rendezvous is complete, students will travel to the trailhead and hike to their camp for the night. Along the way, baseline navigation, waste managment, campsite selection, and other skills will be practiced.
Day 2
COntinued learning and hike out
In the morning, students will put their new cooking skills to use by making breakfast and practice the skills presented previously as well as new concepts. Leave No Trace practices will be discussed as well. The group will conclude the day by striking camp and returning back to the AAI headquarters.
