Most traditional climbing racks include a familiar mix of cams, nuts, and hexes. But when a crack becomes too thin for even the smallest micro cam, another piece of protection can become invaluable: the ball nut.
Ball nuts are one of the most specialized pieces of traditional climbing gear available. Instead of using spring-loaded cam lobes, they feature a hardened steel ball that slides along a tapered metal body. When weighted, the ball wedges securely into a constriction, creating a surprisingly strong placement in cracks that are often too narrow for any other active protection.
Because of their design, ball nuts excel in shallow seams, pin scars, and extremely thin parallel cracks. They are particularly useful on older trad routes where pitons have been removed, leaving behind narrow scars that standard protection cannot adequately protect. Many experienced climbers also carry them on aid climbs, where finding reliable protection in marginal features is essential.
Despite their versatility, ball nuts are not a replacement for cams or passive protection. They require careful placement, sound rock, and an understanding of crack geometry. The rock must provide enough constriction for the ball to engage properly, and climbers should always test placements before committing to them. Like any piece of protection, their effectiveness depends as much on the climber’s judgment as on the equipment itself.
