Why Climb Denali (Mt. McKinley) with American Alpine Institute?

American Alpine Institute
Back to Articles

Climbing Denali with the American Alpine Institute (AAI) isn’t just about reaching North America’s highest summit—it’s about doing it the right way. As an official concessionaire of Denali National Park & Preserve, AAI has decades of experience leading well-trained teams to the top of the mountain. Our expeditions emphasize skill-building, teamwork, and an alpine ethic that prepares climbers for far more than a single ascent. With exceptional logistics, expert guides, and one of the best safety records in the business, AAI offers not just a climb of the “Great One,” but an education in what true mountaineering excellence looks like…

American Alpine Institute Excellence

  • AAI has been successfully guiding the mountain since 1980.
  • The Institute’s average success rate Denali is 77% for Individuals and 85% for expeditions. This means that 85% of all programs put climbers on the summit.
  • Support for expedition climbing begins at your first contact through the execution of your program. Amongst other things this includes live video equipment consultations, recommendations for physical preparation, and logistical support.
  • AAI has an exceptional reputation for mountain safety. Injuries and accidents are exceedingly rare on AAI programs. AAI’s medical director (an ER doctor and guide) is on call during expeditions for consultation with guides in the field.
  • AAI has more internal guide training than any other guide service in the world. AAI guides spiral upward between external trainings and internal trainings to ensure that they are the best possible guides in the industry.
  • The American Mountain Guides Association modeled their Alpine Certification credential program on AAI’s internal training.
  • AAI’s guides have been trained in mountain medicine and rescue. Many are members of volunteer mountain rescue organizations or work as ski patrollers managing accidents.
  • More than 20 AAI guides have been awarded the Denali Pro Award for participating in rescues and for environmental stewardship. This is the highest honor available from Denali National Park.
  • AAI has long been a leader in Leave No Trace in Denali National Park. AAI was the very first company to carry all human waste off the mountain, something now required of all guide services. And AAI was the second guide service to receive the Leave No Trace Gold Standard Credential.
  • AAI is the longest continually accredited guide service with the American Mountain Guides Association. AMGA accreditation is a program that endorses guide services a their high standards in mountain operations. It ensures these programs meet industry best practices for training and business operations, providing a way for participants to identify professional services. Many other operations on Denali do not have this credential.

Testimonials

This is a small sample of testimonials from those that climbed Denali with the American Alpine Institute.

I LOVED the guides. They were simply fantastic. Really great people, and highly competent. In addition to making me feel safe throughout the course of the experience, they were very generous in making themselves available to answer any questions I might’ve had. 5 stars to all of them. I would love to and am hopeful to climb with each of them again.

–Taylor M.

Our guides were fantastic, and were a massive part in making our trip as fun as it was! I cannot express enough how wonderful they were.

–Jessica W.

All three guides were clearly incredibly experienced and highly competent in any mountain situation – and were well suited to be running trips to Denali. All three were very friendly and lots fun to chat to during the camping and pre/post trip, and all three worked very hard at all times to make the trip safe and successful.

–Sam S.

These guides were awesome!!! OMG! I’m so impressed with each one of them!!! George (lead guide) is an ABSOLUTE EXPERT on Denali! — And I grew to COMPLETELY TRUST HIS JUDGEMENT! He is so good! He’s also SO POSITIVE! What a fun guy! What a buoyant attitude!

–Claudia R.

On training day at 14 camp, the lead guide’s insistence in quality training paid huge dividends in our team work on the higher mountain and improved safely. He had just the right balance of pushing us versus praising us. It was a very well done piece of leadership.

–Mark C.

Food on the mountain was excellent and varied. Genuinely not a bad meal. Quantities were great and we were never left hungry or wanting for more.

Really well run expedition. Would love to use AAI again in the future.

–Emma M.

They were very knowledgeable and catered the expedition based on the group’s performance on the mountain. The food was excellent. I learned a lot from the guides and they were all open to teaching and helping us improve our skills.

–Shawn B.

They provided ample opportunities to take care of ourselves on the mountain which we quickly found out was one of the most critical scenarios. The meals were awesome given our circumstances! I could have eaten 5 helpings at every meal. They provided an environment that allowed multiple questions… there was never a time when any question didn’t feel dumb to ask.

–Henry H.

Absolutely grateful to have such amazing guides. They were extremely hard working and communicated very clearly. I really enjoyed having their combo of positive and funny personalities. They made the trip.

Jayson F.

I was extremely impressed with the focus and experience of the guides. They made so many critical decisions that led to a successful summit attempt.
