What the Retreating Glaciers Are Revealing

For decades, glaciers have served as both playgrounds and graveyards for mountaineers. Climbers disappear into crevasses, avalanches bury people beneath snow and ice, and sometimes accidents leave no trace at all. But as glaciers retreat around the world, some of those long-missing climbers are beginning to reappear.

In recent years, a growing number of people who disappeared decades ago have been found as melting glaciers expose remains that have been entombed in ice for years—or even generations.

The Glacier Keeps the Evidence

When someone disappears on a glacier, the body may not simply remain where the accident occurred. A climber who falls into a crevasse can become buried beneath accumulating snow. Over time, that snow compresses into ice, and the body can effectively become part of the glacier.

Glaciers move, however. Slowly, but continuously.

A body caught in the ice can travel downhill with the glacier for decades. Eventually, the ice reaches lower elevations where melting exceeds accumulation. As the glacier thins and retreats, objects trapped within it can emerge at the surface.

This means that a climber who disappeared in one location may eventually be discovered many miles—and many decades—away.

Researchers studying the Aletsch Glacier in Switzerland have even modeled the movement of human remains through the ice. Three brothers who disappeared there in 1926 were found in 2012, almost 90 years after their disappearance.

A Growing Number of Discoveries

The Swiss Alps have produced some of the most remarkable examples.

In 2023, the remains of a German climber who disappeared near the Matterhorn in 1986 were discovered as the Theodul Glacier retreated. In 2025, two Belgian climbers who disappeared in 1992 were identified after their remains emerged from Switzerland’s Trift Glacier.

The phenomenon isn’t limited to Europe.

In 2024, the mummified remains of American climber William Stampfl were discovered on Peru’s Huascarán, 22 years after he disappeared in an avalanche. Retreating ice exposed his remains, allowing his family to finally learn what happened to him.

Glaciers have also been giving up the remains of people lost in aviation accidents. On Alaska’s Knik Glacier, for example, melting ice has been exposing remains from a 1952 military aircraft crash. Decades after the crash, investigators have been able to recover and identify many of those who died.

There is no comprehensive worldwide database of people recovered from retreating glaciers, so it is difficult to put a precise number on the phenomenon. But the pattern is unmistakable: as glaciers shrink, things that have been hidden beneath the ice are becoming accessible again.

Climate Change Is Changing the Search

Historically, a glacier could hide an accident almost indefinitely. A climber might disappear into a crevasse and never be seen again. Searchers could spend days or weeks looking, but once the snow settled and the glacier continued moving, the chances of recovery became increasingly remote.

Today, climate change is altering that equation.

Glaciers around the world are losing mass at unprecedented rates. As the ice thins, old crevasses and previously buried terrain can become exposed. Objects that entered the glacier decades ago—including climbing equipment, aircraft wreckage and human remains—can begin appearing at the surface.

In some cases, this provides families with something they have waited decades to receive: an answer.

For search-and-rescue professionals, however, it creates a strange new problem. A disappearance that was once considered permanently unresolved may suddenly become solvable—not because the search became better, but because the glacier itself changed.

The Human History Inside a Glacier

There is something profoundly strange about these discoveries.

A glacier is often thought of as permanent. Climbers learn to read its movement, its crevasses and its seasonal changes, but there is an intuitive sense that the ice itself is ancient and enduring.

It isn’t.

Glaciers are dynamic landscapes. They advance and retreat, fracture and flow. They carry enormous amounts of rock and sediment. And, occasionally, they carry people.

The objects emerging today provide a physical record of climbing history. Old ice axes, clothing, skis, climbing equipment and human remains can tell stories about accidents that occurred long before today’s rescue technology, communications equipment and search techniques existed.

They are also reminders that the consequences of an accident can persist long after the people involved are gone.

A Changing Mountain Environment

For climbers and mountaineers, these discoveries offer another way to understand what glacier retreat actually means.

Climate change is often discussed through statistics: meters of retreat, degrees of warming, changes in snowpack or the loss of glacial volume. Those measurements are essential, but they can feel abstract.

A 50-year-old climbing rope emerging from a glacier is not abstract.

Neither is an ice axe carried by a climber who disappeared before many of today’s mountaineers were born.

And when human remains emerge from the ice, the change becomes profoundly personal.

The mountains have always been places where people accept a certain degree of risk. But the landscape in which that risk occurs is changing rapidly. Glaciers that once concealed evidence of accidents are shrinking. Routes are changing. Crevasses are opening and closing. Approaches are becoming more complex. Rockfall is increasing in some high-alpine environments.

The disappearance of glaciers doesn’t simply remove ice from the landscape. It changes the entire environment around them.

Learning From What the Ice Reveals

At the American Alpine Institute, we spend a lot of time teaching climbers to understand mountain environments rather than simply move through them. Glacier travel is a perfect example. A glacier is not a static trail covered in snow. It is a moving, changing landscape that requires careful observation and good decision-making.

The stories emerging from retreating glaciers provide another lesson: mountains remember.

Sometimes they remember for decades.

And as the world’s glaciers continue to retreat, they are beginning to give some of those memories back.

For climbers, that is both fascinating and sobering. The ice may be disappearing, but it is leaving behind a record of the people who traveled across it—and sometimes, of those who never made it home.
