Garmin inReach vs. iPhone Satellite Messaging: Which Is Better for Backcountry Emergencies?

For wilderness rescue, a Garmin inReach remains superior to an iPhone’s satellite messaging system because it was designed from the ground up for remote backcountry communication. The inReach provides reliable two-way satellite messaging, a dedicated SOS button monitored by a 24/7 emergency response center, and continuous tracking that allows rescuers, friends, and family members to monitor your location and progress in real time. These features are specifically intended to support people operating far from cell service in challenging environments.

The iPhone satellite messaging system is an impressive technological advancement and can be a valuable emergency backup. However, it was not designed primarily as a wilderness communication device. While it can send emergency messages and share location information, it does not currently provide the same type of continuous tracking functionality offered by dedicated satellite communicators. This means that rescuers and loved ones cannot follow your progress throughout a trip in the same way they can with an inReach.

There are also two recurring issues that have been reported by backcountry users and rescuers. First, satellite messages sometimes appear to go through successfully, but the recipient is unable to send messages back. In these situations, one party believes communication is taking place while the other never receives the response. This can create confusion during emergencies when accurate information is critical.

Second, there have been reports of rescuers responding to “ghost” locations. In other words, the phone reports a position that does not accurately reflect where the individual is actually located. Any location error can complicate rescue efforts, particularly in mountainous terrain, on glaciers, or during severe weather.

For climbers, mountaineers, backpackers, skiers, and other wilderness travelers, a dedicated satellite communicator such as the Garmin inReach remains the more dependable and rescue-focused option. Smartphone satellite messaging is a useful backup, but it should not yet be considered a replacement for a purpose-built emergency communication device.
