Multi-Pitch Skills Course Itinerary

Please keep in mind that this is a standard, yet loose, itinerary. It is subject to change depending on conditions, weather, group dynamics, pace, and summit strategies.

Program Details

The Multi-Pitch Skills Course is designed for climbers who are comfortable on single-pitch rock climbs and are ready to progress into longer, more complex routes. Throughout four days of instruction, students develop the systems and techniques required to efficiently climb multi-pitch routes, manage belay transitions, build and clean anchors, rappel, and move confidently through exposed terrain. The course culminates with the application of these skills on classic multi-pitch climbs in the North Cascades.

Itinerary

Day 1

Multi-Pitch Systems and Anchor Management

Plan to meet your fellow climbers and instructor(s) in Leavenworth promptly at 8 am. As soon as the rendezvous is complete, we will travel to the chosen climbing area for the day.

The first day focuses on the foundational systems required for multi-pitch climbing. Students will learn about multi-pitch equipment selection, rope management techniques, belaying from above, anchor evaluation and construction, efficient transitions at belay stations, communication systems for long routes, and route planning and hazard assessment. Students will spend the day practicing these systems on single-pitch terrain.

Day 2

Multi-Pitch Transitions and Rope Systems

The second day emphasizes efficiency and organization while climbing above the ground. Students will work through a series of mock leads and multi-pitch scenarios designed to develop smooth transitions and effective teamwork.

Topics for the day will include leader and follower responsibilities, building and managing hanging belays, constructing multi-directional anchors, rope stacking and organization, belay changeovers, escaping the belay, and route finding considerations.

Throughout the day, instructors provide feedback as students practice the complete sequence of multi-pitch climbing systems in a controlled environment.

Day 3

Guided Multi-Pitch Climbing

Today, the course moves onto longer routes where students begin applying the systems learned during the first two days. Depending on weather and conditions, climbing may take place at Washington Pass or another suitable North Cascades venue.

Topics covered throughout the day include multi-pitch route execution, lead and follower efficiency, belay station management, climbing communication in real-world settings, problem-solving on route, and descent planning. Students will climb multiple pitches throughout the day while refining these systems and techniques under instructor supervision.

Day 4

Advanced Multi-Pitch Techniques and Final Climb

The final day focuses on integrating all of the skills learned throughout the course. Students will participate in a longer multi-pitch climb while taking a greater role in route management and decision-making.

Students will learn multi-pitch rappelling, retreat strategies, route selection and planning, managing exposure and terrain transitions, advanced rope management, and efficient movement on longer routes. The course concludes with a debrief and discussion of recommended next steps for climbers interested in pursuing longer rock routes, alpine rock objectives, and future lead climbing development.
