The most important part of any anchor is the part that we clip everything to. This has historically been referred to as the power point, the master point or the focal point.
The American Mountain Guides Association is moving to try to bring North American climbing language to a universal standard with European climbing language. The Euros refer to this point as the central point. In the second edition of the AMGA textbook, The AMGA Single Pitch Manual by Bob Gaines, Jason D. Martin and Andrew Megas-Russell, the point will be referred to as the central point. In addition to that, Bob Gaines, a guide with a lot of climbing text books under his belt, will be moving the future language in his books to that standard as well.
As climbing language tends to be organic, it is possible that this won’t be the last time this terminology changes. But the goal, at least amongst guides, is standardization…
