Leave No Trace

Wilderness and Drone Use

American Alpine Institute
Back to Blog

The Wilderness Act of 1964 is a landmark U.S. law that created the National Wilderness Preservation System, protecting over 100 million acres of federal land from development and mechanized intrusion. It defines wilderness as areas “untrammeled by man,” where nature remains largely untouched.

Because the Act prohibits “motorized equipment” and “mechanical transport,” drones (UAS) are not allowed to take off, land, or operate within designated wilderness areas. The ban helps preserve the solitude, natural soundscapes, and wildlife integrity of these protected lands. In short: wilderness areas are meant for quiet footsteps, not buzzing propellers.

When you do decide to use a drone, always consider Leave No Trace and how the drone use will impact others.

The American Alpine Institute offers a wide array of Leave No Trace programs.
