Students Will Learn:

Advanced Aid and Free Climbing Skills:

  • Selection & use of personal equipment for an aid climb including specific ropes, harnesses, & equipment
  • Design concepts, selection & use of technical equipment for mixed aid & free climbing
  • Advanced rigging for multi-pitch climbing
  • Use of big wall gear & equipment including etriers, daisy chains, mechanical ascenders, haul bags, portaledges, leeper cams, hooks & an assortment of other gear
  • Use of fixed lines
  • Strategy for multi-pitch aid or mixed climbs
  • Strategies for multi-pitch descents
  • Techniques for hauling, big wall bivies, & for pendulums
  • Clean aid climbing techniques
  • Complex hauling systems
  • Management of hanging belays
  • Strategies for multi-day routes

Self-Rescue Skills & Objective Hazards Evaluation

  • Techniques for raising and lowering an injured climber
  • Evaluation & prediction of mountain weather patterns
  • Introduction to the assessment of natural hazards

Leadership Skills

  • Technical & personal functions of individuals on an ascent: roles & responsibility
  • Problem solving: gathering appropriate data & assessment techniques
  • Evolving leadership roles: individual leadership vs. collective decision making

Environmental Protection Skills

  • An introduction to vertical ecology
  • Leave No Trace travel, camping, & climbing skills

Prerequisites

Inclusions

Included in the course cost is group technical climbing equipment, climbing permits, and the guide fee.

Exclusions

Not included in the course cost are all personal clothing and climbing gear, transportation, lodging/camping fees, meals while on the course, travel insurance, or gratuities to the guide.

If the Aid and Big Wall course has you dreaming of bigger objectives, consider stepping up to our Alpine Mountaineering and Technical Leadership (AMTL 3) program. This comprehensive course combines advanced alpine rock, steep snow, and glacier travel with big wall systems and multi-day climbing strategy. It’s the ultimate progression for climbers looking to tackle technical alpine routes, remote walls, and major expeditions with confidence.

Locations

We offer our Learn to Lead course in some of the most iconic climbing destinations in the country like Leavenworth, Red Rock, Moab, and Joshua Tree.  In doing so, we are able to offer this course year-round in world-class terrain. Each location offers stunning scenery and unique climbing styles, from the splitter cracks of the desert to the alpine granite of the Cascades, giving you a well-rounded experience and the chance to explore incredible places while building your skills.

Winter (October – April) locations include:

  • Red Rock Canyon, NV – located just minutes outside the city of Las Vegas.

Summer (April – September) locations include:

  • Index, WA – one of the best places to get in Big Wall practice.
